Frenectomy: prices and techniques

frenectomy-price

A frenectomy, or freinectomy, is a benign surgical procedure that involves cutting the lingual or labial frenulum with a laser, scalpel or scissors.

This operation is performed under local anesthesia and is therefore painless for the patient. Frenectomy is usually required in infants and young children.

In this article, we will discuss the different techniques of frenectomy as well as the average prices charged in France.

Labial frenectomy and price ?

The labial brake is a fibrous tissue that connects the upper gums to the upper lip. If this tissue is too tight and therefore attached too low to the gum, it can cause discomfort for the patient:

  • Difficulty smiling properly
  • Discomfort in lip movement
  • Difficulty playing a wind instrument
  • Etc.

A restrictive labial brake often causes a diastema, i.e. the upper incisors are separated by an interdental space.

These inconveniences can be eliminated by a frenectomy labial mobility. Once the lip frenulum is cut, usually with a laser, the patient regains optimal lip mobility. This procedure is performed by a health professional (child dentist, pediatrician, ENT specialist, etc.).

For a labial frenectomy, the price of the operation is between 80 € and 225 €. This price difference is justified by the method used for the procedure, the choice of anesthetic products or the location of the practitioner.

Lingual frenectomy and price

The lingual brake is also part of the oral mucosa. It is the fibrous tissue that joins the floor of the mouth to the back of the tongue.

In babies and young children, it is not uncommon for the tongue to be too short to allow for proper positioning and movement.

A tongue-tie that is too short in infants can lead to difficulties in feeding properly. The side effects are usually :

  • Increased fatigue
  • The formation of lip blisters
  • Too slow a weight gain
  • Restless nights
  • Digestive problems.

To correct these discomforts, a specialist usually recommends a lingual frenectomy. Following the operation, the baby quickly recovers its ability to feed normally.

For one week after the procedure, it is recommended to gently massage the baby's tongue to recover its mobility and good positioning. If the child is older, he or she can perform some simple re-education exercises.

For a lingual frenectomy, prices range from €80 to €325, but they may vary depending on the complexity of the procedure, the products used, or whether the health care professional practices conventional rates.

Depending on the insurance company and your health coverage, the price for a lingual or labial frenectomy will be fully or only partially reimbursed.
