Inlay-Onlay
An inlay-onlay is a cast block, made by the dental technician, that is used to restore the tooth as part of a deep cavity treatment.
The inlay-onlay is another way to restoration of the tooth following a cavity treatment. Compared to a simple composite, it is recommended for important cavities on the permanent teeth.
A inlay-onlay is a cast block, either in composite resin or ceramic (tooth-colored), made by the dental technician to measure. It is bonded into a cavity after the tooth is prepared. The inlay-onlay fits perfectly, reproducing the occlusal anatomy of the tooth and its relationship with neighboring teeth.
Compared to the traditional composite, theinlay-onlay has many advantages:
- it resists much better;
- it is more waterproof than a normal composite, and therefore reduces the risk of bacteria settling underneath, causing another cavity;
- it is more aesthetic, because the inlay-onlay is custom-made by the prosthesis laboratory, with a shade modelled on that of the natural teeth;
- it is more comfortable, because the inlay-onlay is adapted to the neighboring teeth, preventing food from getting stuck between the teeth and creating food jams.
